If the drive is not reading or burning files it's possible that it's
worn out. Cdrw drives have a way of just quitting. That's it.
If the drive has age on it probably time for a new one. You could first
try a cddrive lense cleaner. That might give you
a little more use. But as cheap as drives are today ( in the twenty
dollar range ) a new one would be the best solution.
