Having an external modem is a great idea especially because one can turn
it
off. The above mentioned behavior is common to serial modems. Just buy
a serial to USB adaptor. Be sure to uninstall the serial modem first.
I usually
disable both com ports and the serial ports in the BIOS because I no
longer
use these legacy ports.
