Ivan, I don't know how far your energies and resources extend, but have you
looked at:

This is the so-called 'Unofficial Win 98 Serice Pack' and my superficial
impression of it is that it provides a combination of MS update links as
well as upgrades of various dlls from ME. You would need access to an ME
installation disk, of course, but, alternatively, if you could find someone
in the ng that has installed the USP, they could tell you if the behaviour
is altered. It provides other amenities, such as support for flash or thumb
drives, etc..
There is a link to a forum which has posts from users, if that's any
help.
