OK, you definitely are not connecting.

Did you run the Network Setup Wizard? On the desktop computer, did you select
"This computer connects directly to the Internet. ..."? On the laptop, did you
select "This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my
network"?

Let's take a look at "ipconfig /all" from both computers.

Internet Explorer should work quite well with AOL. Just setup the connection
properly (Tools - Internet Options - Connections).
