For example, in MS Word, I can move a line from one place to another and
simultaneously a file is stored on disk (which I can hear and see light). For
every line I move I get a disk access. Other times the background job waits a
few seconds and then makes an access to disk.

I have 500MB of Ram so the problem is not paging or swaping, unless the VM
size is somehow set too low which does not seem likely as I am using the XP
default size.
