Default Video Playback problems

First off I hope I placed this question on the right forum.

I just built a budget system and am having problem with playing back videos
(mpg, mov, avi, etc) on XP Home.

When I run Windows Media player, VLC, or quicktime, the file will not run.
quicktime will run 1sec of audio, but no video. The media player software
then locks up, and has to be shutdown by using the task manager.

The system buld is:

AMD Duron, 1.8ghz applebred core
Foxconn Winfast mobo, using on board sound
512mg RAM, rosewill, one stick
XFX 6200 agp 256mg video card

Now I can run video games (Civ4, BF2, etc) with no problems, audio runs
great, just wont run video, including dvds (power dvd 5). This is especially
annoying as i plan giving this cheapo system to a friend who wants to start
cutting his teeth on video editing after I build my dual opteron system (Tyan
Tiger K8WE baby!)

I got another buddy with a old liscence of win 2k that I he is no longer
using that I could install, but would rather not as I just bought an OEM copy
of XP home.

I have polled other of my friends, but the entirety of our 'puter nerd
circle is drawing a blank. I have reinstalled Windows, and that didn't a
durned thing.

After assembling the only issue I had with the system was that BIOS wanted
to run the USB HD I had plugged before the regular HD, quick BIOS adjustment
and went off running like a charm.

I figgured I would poll the greater windows brain trust out there to see if
I am out of luck, or what. While it is annoying, I can live with it. I have a
laptop running 2k that can display the videos, Its bothersome that my new (if
low tech) system cannot run it.

Also the thumbnails of the videos work just fine when in explorer.

Any help would be immensely helpful. Thank you
