Hey Buddy, Jus looking at ur problem, i did have a similar issue at one
of my clients place, not exactly and all symptoms, but certainly a few
of them. Try installing a software called System Mehcanic 7. Use this
software to clean out your registry problems (I trust this software
more than any other registry cleaner). Remmeber before making any
changes, create a restore point in XP and back up registry data(which
can also be done in Sysmech. after cleaning out registry, reboot with
your windows-xp cd and you get option by which by pressing R button you
can repair your installation.

Wat has happend is some of your registry values (pertaining to
desktop) have been altered, removing bad entries wud b done by sys-mech
and then repairing XP from boot dick will recreate those fresh entries
again.
