Default smc wifi conflicts with trident video

I have a conflict between
* TRIDENT VIDEO ACCELERATOR BLADE 3D/MVP4 (driver version: 5.1.2001.0) =
onboard
and
* an SMC PCI wifi card (model: SMCWPCI-G)

If both devices are enabled my machine (running winxp) won't boot. It hangs
before the login screen is shown.
If I disable one of them there is no problem. However, if I re-enable the
disabled device after boot, my machine will hang within 5 minutes.
As far as I know I am running the latest drivers. I have reinstalled winxp
(thus: it s not a SP2 matter or virus or malware thing -> it s a neat, clean
machine) but the problem persists.

I suspect it s a PCI conflict, although video and wifi are assigned a
different IRQ. BTW, the wifi card replaces an old ethernet card in the same
slot.
The problem is that I do not know how to determine the cause. The F8 boot
logging option does not give appropriate info, the event logger shuts up when
the machine hangs.
I don't feel like spending two days installing some linux distro to
determine whether it s OS related.

If anyone has a suggestion?

Thx,

Kris
