I've seen this debated many times over the years in many places. Usually
winds up in a ~50/50 result. Pick what's best for you and do that.
To help add to your befuddlement, from a power usage/cold start point of
view, hibernate *is* off. Different levels of standby are varying degrees of
on. (see
