Orin, it's probably not that you "got it first"... just that the low volume of
November updates allowed /all/ AU computers to update faster.
Here's what happens in this process:
(1) Sometime on Patch Tuesday, usually afternoon Pacific Time, MS publishes
the content via WU/MU/SUS/WSUS.
(2) Sometime during the next 22 hours after the publication of the content,
the WUA on your system performs it's approx-once-per-day check for available
updates. It finds the updates, and
(3) Begins downloading them. It's this step here which when patch days are
very heavy could cause you to wait until Friday to actually get updates to
install.
(4) Once the updates are downloaded, then the WUA schedules them for
installation at the next 'scheduled' installation window (3am by default - so
in the best of scenarios, this will normally be 3am /Thursday/ morning -- but
there is a 1 in 3 chance that you could get the update fast enough for it to
install at 3am Wednesday morning.)
If there are any delays in (3) at all, then you'll see them scheduled for
installation at 3am Friday morning.
If you don't use scheduled installations, then you'll likely see the
Notification Area icon sometime late Wednesday evening, or on Thursday. Again,
if there are delays at (3), you may not see the notification until Friday.
Note.. you can force the execution of the WUA detection cycle, by running
'wuauclt /detectnow' on Tuesday evening, which can also contribute to getting
them installed in that 3am Wednesday cycle, provided the download completes by
3am.
