No.. it is REQUIRED to install an update.

Then turn off the "auto-install at 3am" configuration, and change the
configuration to "Notify for installation". Then you can /choose/ when you
install the updates. A reboot will still be /required/ following the
installation.

It's not /important/.. it is REQUIRED. As for "query running programs". The
assumption -- and the RECOMMENDED practice -- is to CLOSE ALL PROGRAMS before
installing updates.

The installation of updates is predictable.. it occurs on Tuesday evening of
the second week of each month, or during the next few days. More
significantly -- it occurs at 3am (by default), but /you/ can change this to
/any/ time of the day you want. You should mark your calendar if you intend to
continue using automatic installation.

Yeah... this is like not buckling your seat belt because it interferes with
getting out of the car after you park it.

Turn ON Automatic Updates, and spend a few minutes learning how to properly
use it -- since it seems to be having such an impact on your use of the
system. Sure would be unfortunate to have your system invaded due to an
uninstalled security update because it was interfering with your "code
compiling" or "data processing".

btw.. I'm curious as to what kind of "code compiling" requires several hours
of overnight system activity!?
