Thanks for the reply Shehan,
When I connect to updates using this icon, the web site (not spoofed) checks
my system, then displays a choice of auto? or custom install.
It doesn't matter which I choose, the next screen is advice to install
Windows validation software. OK. Several seconds later a new screen says
"Software Upgrade for Some Windows Components Required"
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us
Download and install now. OK
A popup then states "updates were unable to be successfully installed"
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130).
The next screen is "Review Your Installation results"
Failed Updates - .........KB892130
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us
Check update history. by following this link.

And when I check, there are no failed updates, only the automatic successful
ones that appear to be up-to-date.

I cannot get out of the loop,.

I hope that is clear enough.
