Problem with registry/KB905915
Here's my problem. I have Windows Millennium operating system. A few weeks
ago, I sent an email to the technical support crew telling them I had a
problem with the download of the critical update to KB896688. Once I
clicked on the update, I would assume that it was downloaded so then the
window would come up and ask me to reboot. So I did. I came back online,
checked windows update again and had seen the KB896688 update listed, needing
to be downloaded. Regardless if I rebooted my machine or not, windows update
would list the KB896688 update needing to be downloaded. I had given up hope
so I let some time pass. Recently, I checked windows update again and this
time it listed the KB905915 update(supersedes KB896688). So I downloaded
that and the same thing happened to me when I downloaded the KB896688 update.
I even tried to download the update from the windows catalog, save it on my
desktop and download it. When I did download it, it would go its course but
this grey window would pop up saying this": Advanced INF Installer - Reason
- The configuration registry database is corrupt. However, it did say the
update was downloaded successfully. I'm thinking that this is a registry
problem. I haven't messed around with the registry so that's why this is
puzzling to me. Is there a simplistic way that I can go into the registry,
fix the error then download the update(KB905915) without having the grey
window(registry) popping up along with the update looping over and over for
me to download? I've gone to regedit.exe a few times just to see what it's
like but I haven't gone and changed anything. I'm afraid of doing something
and my computer won't run properly. Like I said, I'd like to be able to
download this update without a problem and have my registry operating
efficiently. Any input is appreciated.
