Default Re: Update installation fails

If the very last item in that link does not resolve the problem, then check
the C:\Windows\System32 folder for the file named cryptsvc.dll
Make sure that it exists, and check the file version as it should be
5.1.2600.1190
If the file does not exist or if the file version is one previous to the
above, check the System32\dllcache folder (have to set Folder Options>View
to Show hidden files and folders and also uncheck Hide protected operating
system files) for the file version for cryptsvc.dll If the file version is
5.1.2600.1190 then copy the file from dllcache to C:\Windows\System32
folder. If that file version is not available, it can be downloaded from
the Windows Update site or Windows Update Catalog. If your friend's XP is
the original version (i.e., without SP1), the needed update would be Update
Rollup 1 for Windows XP 826939. If XP with SP1, the needed update would be
either Update Rollup 1 for Windows XP 826939 or Q817287:Critical Update
(Catalog Database Corruption in Microsoft Windows XP)
