I've not found that the Symantec branded products are a resource
problem, the Norton Branded ones appear to be.

As for a firewall, if you have DSL/Cable or other ethernet provided
internet device, get at least a NAT Router. While a NAT Router is not a
firewall it's about as good as anything you can run on your PC, better
in many cases.
