Hi Brian,
All of the information that I have read on the subject points to MDAC as
the culprit and I have only seen 2 suggested methods to repair the problem:
1- To copy the HKLM & HKCU ODBC registry keys from an IDENTICAL
computer to your computer and,
2- To reinstall MDAC, be it by applying SP2 if you don't have it
installed on your computer or to initiate the MDAC.inf file.
As I and Malke have suggested in earlier posts you should really post
this question on the Office groups where the folks with in depth
knowledge of Office issues can offer assistance.

Note that the article applies to all flavours of Windows, read the
specifics for XP. Also note that now, according to that article and
contrary to what I said earlier, you're supposed to install the JET pack
before MDAC on XP systems. The article also contains important
information for the steps to take before trying to reinstall MDAC
(emptying temp folders, TIF, etc.)

There you will find information on installing MDAC from the .inf file.
NOTE: THESE ARE NOT SUGGESTED FIXES! They are meant for you to
acquaint yourself with the innards of MDAC.
In my first post I said that "It doesn't look too good..." and it
doesn't. Be warned that reinstalling MDAC could very well be the first
step to a repair reinstall or even complete reinstall of XP. It could
work like a charm or blow up in your face! Not good news when you have
to rollback or reinstall MDAC!
Once again and finally, you are best to ask about this in the Office
groups, they know the subtleties and pitfalls related to Office
installation.
