Default Scarey messages re Registry

I have just connected to the internet and I'm getting constant pop-up
messages from 'Messenger Service' telling me my Windows Registry is severely
corrupted and warning of dire consequences if I don't download from
www.RegistryFixGold.com, www.msregistrycleaner.com, and a couple of similar
sites.

I strongly suspect that this is spyware or something similar. Is that all it
is?

If so, how do I stop the darned things popping up every couple of minutes?
I've got pop-ups blocked already.

Thanks in advance.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING FROM THEM!!!

You've got spyware. Take your computer to a reputable repair shop and have
it cleaned out.

Thanks to both Rojo and Pike. I was pretty sure the messages were bogus. I'll
look into the spyware further on castlecops.

Turn on a firewall. If you are using Windows XP the Windows firewall will
stop these messages.

BTW this is messenger service, which has nothing to do with Windows or MSN
Messenger.

2 good free programs- adaware and spybot- will see if you have any spyware.

(watch out as other companies use the same name for very dubious software-
don't use other links)
