Well, it worked until I logged off and back on. Now the Intel site works, but this: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga...1840/0081a.gif causes IE to close completely. (It works in Mozilla Firefox). --- Replace you know what by j to email ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I can go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga...1840/0081a.gif without any problem with my Internet Explorer To my mind, the fact that unchecking "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)" did make a difference, tends to point toward a spyware critter of some sort having infected your system. Hopefully, once you have detected and removed that scumware, you can recheck "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)" and then reinstall your Eudora email program if needed to get it working properly again. Consider trying a scan with the free version of ewidow: http://www.ewido.net/en/ No Anti Spyware program out there manages to catch all spyware that is running wild in the Internet. I just recently heard about ewidow and have been advised that it is pretty darn good at dealing with spyware. I scanned my own system with it a few days ago just to check it out. No nasties found on my system, however I have been running about 5 different Anti Spyware programs religiously for years now and always keep them up to date. You did see the posting from Frank Saunders concerning your issue, right? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

I think that maybe my copy of IE has been corrupted. That link works if I paste it in, but not if I click from my email program. Also, if I go to internet options and click "OK", it locks up. If I make a change and click "apply" it locks up. If I Delete Cookies or Delete Files, it works OK, but if I Clear History it locks up (and my history isn't very large because I keep only 4 days). I ran SFC and that was OK. I tried to download IE and reinstall it, but it said that I already had the latest IE, so it wouldn't do it. --- Replace you know what by j to email |

After your suggestion, I ran: Microsoft Antivirus (naturally) Spybot AdAware Spyware Doctor CounterSpy all full scans (took a few hours). Then I ran another full virus scan, with the absolute latest virus definitions. --- Replace you know what by j to email |

Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types. Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it. Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version. Select 'open'. Click Edit. "Application used to perform this action" should read: "C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome (Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the double quotes.) Over and out at least for now... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Consider creating a new User for yourself and log in as that new User and see if the issue still persists. If not, then just copy over important personal files to appropriate folders of the new user and avoid copying over anything in your currrent C:\Documents and Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\History folder. You will need to open Windows Explorer and then go to Tools > Folder Options... > View tab and set it to - Show hidden files and folders (Uncheck) Hide extensions for known file types (Uncheck) Hide protected operating systems files (Recommended) The above settings will need to be set up for any Users involved. You may need to boot to Safe Mode as the built in Administrator account to create the new user and then restart to Normal mode and log in as the New User in order to create the profile for that new user and then perform the copying over of needed files. Once you are certain that all needed data has been copied over, you could then remove the current User and set the Folder Options settings back to default if so desired. <youknowwhat.mccranie@adelphia.net> wrote: It seems to be fixed now. To make a long story not quite as long (I spent quite a few hours on it): I used EndItAll to kill as many processes as possible. Then IE would work for one time, usually. I rebooted and use task manager to start ending tasks. I started in alphabetical order, ending one that could be ended and testing. When I got to #43, StatusClient.exe (supposedly from HP, and I use an HP printer - *), I ended it, and the problem seemed to go away. I took it out of msconfig startup. (Later I saw that there were two of them in there.) But the problem was back after I rebooted. Then I used EndItAll to Close what it could. The problem was still there. Then I used EndItAll to try to kill what it couldn't close. The problem went away. There were only three things that were killed that it couldn't close - msmsgs.exe and two programs with Sunbelt CounterSpy. I removed CounterSpy, rebooted and it seems to be OK. I thought I told msmsgs.exe to not load, since I don't use messenger, but it is back in my Task Manager. I haven't tried turning StatusClient back on to see if it was part of the problem. There were a lot more steps in there, but I left them out, trying to hit the essential ones. * - do bad programs sometimes use the name of good programs, to hide? Many thanks to everyone who helped. I can just about always count on some expert help from the MS newsgroups. --- Replace you know what by j to email |
