Hello!
This is just a shot in the dark. My wife was upgrading her virus scanning (McAfee 7 to 10) on her Win98SE machine. Now, even after uninstalling and removing EVERYTHING related to McAfee, her machine will no longer access the access the network *with the browser*. (Ethernet, Linksys router, DSL Internet) I can ping the router and other stations; other stations can ping her machine; I can even ping web sites with their IP!! All Internet Options are at the defaults, and all the network properties (TCP/IP, etc) are as they have been for the several years this machine has been working fine. The only possibility is that one of the changes McAfee required to Internet Options -- or the crashing of the McAfee installation -- disabled browser access to the network. I'm at the end of the line with this. I can't think of anything other than *reformatting the drive and reinstalling Windows*! Is there anyone who can help!! --Bill |

(Sorry. Don't do this much.)
By "no longer access the network", I mean neither IE6 nor Firefox will find the router IP or an Internet IP or domain name. Though, as I said, you can ping all of these and other network stations by IP. The network must be working; the gateway as well (since I can ping web sites), right? The Internet Options are as they have always been. What else can disable browser access in Win98SE? --B |

Check your Proxy settings : Tools, Options, Connection, LAN Settings, Use Proxy
I THINK that some AV programs change this to 10.0.0.1 or similar to intercept traffic "Bill" wrote: > Hello! > > This is just a shot in the dark. Thanks SO much for the suggestion. Unfortunately, none of the checkboxes in
the "Proxy Server" box, including "Use a proxy server for your LAN" are checked. So, I don't think a proxy server is active or the issue. We'd sure appreciate any other ideas. --Bill "BillyBoy" wrote: > Check your Proxy settings : Tools, Options, Connection, LAN Settings, Use Proxy > I THINK that some AV programs change this to 10.0.0.1 or similar to > intercept traffic > > "Bill" wrote: > > > Hello! > > > > This is just a shot in the dark. Be it known on this group that Frank Saunders is a god! I simply ran
LSP-Fix once, clicked Finish, and everything is now working. Frank, we had backups of all data, but you probably saved us a day of work reformatting and reinstalling Windows and all my wife's applications and settings. (And, at that, there's probably a lot that might have taken much longer to straighten out.) FYI and FWIW, it was McAfee's removal routine, perhaps in conjunction with the previous VirusScan version, that caused this last Sunday. Thank you, thank you. --Bill & Linda "Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE" wrote ... > "Bill" wrote ... > > Hello! > > > > This is just a shot in the dark. I was having the exact same problem after removing McAfee. I spent
several hours trouble shooting the problem and this newsgroup thread provided the solution. I'm indebted...thank you very much Frank Saunders! Henceforth no McAfee will be getting with 100 yards of my PC's!! I am still removing McAfee related errors but one step at a time. -- Kim -- |
