I'm having problems over here. My IE isn't working but I can still
connect to my messengers and stuff, so it doesn't appear to be an ethernet issue. Can anyone please help? Suzanne selenalare - Yahoo CheetahL...@hotmail.com - MSN suzyelizabeth25 - AIM |

We'll find out in a minute, I just send you a yahoo request
![]() I suspect you are one of the people with an IE problem, which operating system and do you keep up to date using the windows or Microsoft update websites? It will help someone to figure out which problem you have. At risk of being ridiculed for responding to my own post
![]() The resolution here, achieved after some investigation came from the fact that although the machine was working fine with messenger programs (and the ISP had diagnosed router trouble) the machine could not ping, nor could it be pinged from the same network. Zone Alarm had been shut down and the tray icon had disappeared but it had not properly shut down so the firewall component itself was still running, and had decided to block a lot of things. We've seen that before and the procedure always seems very obscure. Do you have a public link to it for the record? Or is it only available to registered users? --- |

Well the OP believed that ZA was stopped and this was reasonable since the tray icon was not showing, however the inability to ping either way indicated something still there in the way. Despite lack of IE and Firefox and anything else, Yahoo and the other IMs were working, I know that because we were using Yahoo ![]() She had tried lspfix and winsockxpfix etc etc, and adaware showed nothing but trivia. Then she noticed all on her own that ZA firewall was still running - I didn't think to ask how she noticed this but it seems to me like the real problem is the vanishing icon. This post would indicate that there's a problem somewhere in an update (Makes sense)... http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/b...d=30237#M30237 I don't know if you are aware but the ZA firewall component used to be quite secure, so to uninstall it was necessary to uncheck "Run at startup / Start when windows starts" and then reboot before attempting uninstall as even the ZA control panel couldn't shut it down. This left a firewalled system even if ZA appeared gone, so the procedure then was to reinstall / uncheck that box / reboot / uninstall again. I don't know for sure but would expect that to be the same today. This was always in the uninstall instructions but who read the instructions ???My gripe with ZA is that they tried to be all things to all people and for a time this caused complications where they should have stuck with a perfectly good firewall and optional extras. I understand the need to compete, but don't see falling down the same holes as being productive ![]() If this is a recent ZA update issue it's probably worth remembering for a while... Charlie |
