Default IE application hang

IE 6 recently started opening slowly and not closing. I will get multiple
iexplore processes in Task Manager. Event viewer also shows the following:

Hanging application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, hang module
hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

PC is spyware and virus free.
How do I stop this??

And how, pray do you know it's spyware free?
What programs did you use to check?
