Default Flash player 8 shuts down Explorer

My daughter has been experiencing game freezes and shutdowns on her online
games (Disney) and has the same error:

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: flash8.ocx
ModVer: 8.0.22.0 Offset: 00054b1f

It occurs between 20-30 seconds into the game. The games worked fine until
about 4-6 weeks ago. I tried several things so far with no success.
1. Uninstall Flash and reinstall from Macromedia website
2. Registry correction from KB909889
3. Uninstall Flash and reinstall from game website
4. Used Windows XP and IE Explorer update sites to make sure most current
versions are active

Any more ideas?

Does the PC have a VIA chipset with onboard sound? My daughter's PC has the
same issue, turning down the hardware acceleration for audio appeared to
alleviate it a little, but it still crashes occassionally. Apparently it's a
bug in the audio handling in Flash, possibly only occurring when used with
older VIA chipsets and onboard audio, but I can't find the post from
Macromedia in their forum that detailed possible workarounds (none of which
actually solved it on my PC, but might help with yours). If I find it again
I'll post the URL.
