I just recently bought a new Dell laptop and as usual, the first thing
I did when I got it home was format the HD and go back with a fresh install of XP Pro. As soon as everything was loaded I noticed that IE had some problems. When I drag the IE window around the screen it is very choppy. This is also evident when scrolling the page. At first I thought it was the "show window contents while dragging" option, but that turned out not to be the case. An even stranger thing also happens. When IE is open it forces the same behavior in all of the other open windows. Closing IE cures the problem for the other windows. In an effort to solve the problem, I downloaded the IE 7 Beta from MSDN and installed it. No luck. Still the same issue. Any ideas? thanks, ..brit |

I don't know the answer but I suspect the problem is video drivers. Did you
try the machine in original config and did it work alright then? I know some Dells have DPI settings that disagree with IE, and I've seen in the past driver issues that only affect IE... I suspect this is due to the fact that for some of it's more complex rendering IE actually gets quite close to the hardware - a pity really because most of these functions are never used on websites ![]() I would look around Dell's website for advice and for drivers and see if there's anything there... and of course wait for more replies here because someone may have seen exactly this before. I agree with your clean install approach but not being familiar with the model I have no idea what the hardware settings may be. Perhaps a clue could be found in the docs or FAQ on the website. Right click my computer>properties and find the hardware settings for the monitor... has it got any query marks in there? Thanks for the reply and as you suspected, I also suspected the video drivers. I've installed them (from Dell and from ATI) several times with no difference being made. All hardware is functioning properly according to the Hardware Manager. I actually never even opened a browser on it when it was in the original Dell configuration, but surely this doesn't happen with the standard load. I hope not at least. Hopefully someone will stumble on this that has experienced this issue previously. I will dig around on Dell's website and see if I can turn up anything. thanks, ..brit |

Ah okay. It's just that it always seemed a bit illogical that a web browser
should have that close a relationship with drivers... you know what I mean, you'd think it would be no closer than other things... What model dell is it? I seem to recall some models, Inspiron I think, had a resolution setting that showed some conflict with images but for the life of me can't find a reference.
