Default IE6 and temp files on XP Home

Hi

I am having a prob with a machine running XP - Home grrrr...

It seems as though IE has a problem saving temp files such as media or pdf
files.
To explain - (While using hotmail)
If I recieve an email with a PDF file attached and select to download it
If I choose to just open it (instead of save), it will load up acrobat and
then acrobat will come up with an error saying it cannot find the file.
However, if I choose to save the file to a specific location, it saves it
perfectly and then i am able to view it.
Same applies for if I was downloading a video file attached to an email ,
media player opens up, then comes up with an error stating it cannot find the
file.

I cannot tell if it is a permissions problem thanks to XP Homes minimalist
approach to NTFS management.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, James.
