ActiveX problems

I have Windows 98SE running on a dial-up computer at a weekend house,
and McAfee for antivirus. The IE is version 6.

McAfee won't do it's updates because it is looking for certain security
elements to be in place involving ActiveX. I have followed their
specific steps to enable ActiveX control (Tools, Security Tab, Set to
Medium and RESET, Download Signed ActiveX = Enabled; and there's another
set to PROMPT per their instructions). However, it still does not
work.

The techs at McAfee are at a loss as to what to have me change or
fix. Is there something in the registry I can delete or manually
"tweak" to get the two tools to recognize each other?

Sounds like the McAfee updates are trying to download an ActiveX control to
your Downloaded Program files but your security settings won't allow this or
the version that has been installed on your computer is damaged.

First go to your Downloaded Program Files Folder. Use the Windows Explorer.
The folder should be under your Windows root directory (C:\Win)

You are looking for damaged downloaded program files. View the details of
the folder and there is a column with the controls status.

If there are damaged controls, right click on the item for options. Select
either the Update or Repair option.


Second, lower your security levels to 'Low' for the Internet Zone. ( This
will allow you to download un-signed Active X controls. Perhaps McAffee is
using an Unsigned component.

Start McAffee live update. Do its thing, Then return your internet secirity
level back to medium.

Rob, I had a chance to get to this computer again today and try your
suggestions.

First, there is only a c:\windows folder, but I looked at the Download Programs
folder there. Found two "uninstalled" or "unknown" status files in it which
were ActiveX. There was no function to click on either of them and repair,
etc., so I deleted the 2 files since the others in that folder indicated a
status of Installed. I figured, hopefully correctly, that if these showed a
status = Unknown, then they were bad.

I lowered the Internet Zone security to LOW and then tried McAfee again. It is
still "stuck" in trying to tell me that ActiveX controls are not properly
enabled. I went through the various elements within the security controls once
again just to be sure they were as directed by McAfee...... no luck.

In meantime, I found several sites offering a free fixup program for ActiveX
controls, and have downloaded one of those. Had to return to the city, but
left the program running its scan to see what was missing, broken, etc. I
should be back there some time this weekend to check on it all.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Hi,
I seem to have the same kind of problems - my problem is that the Downloaded
Program Files Folder disappeared. So I am unable to run programs with
ActiveX through IE 6. Looking forward to your feedback.
