Default Auto insertion of username and password

I have two computers with supposedly identical configurations. Each has IE
6.0.2800.1106 using the same version of Microsoft XP with SP 2. But the two
computers behave differently in one area. When I go to a particular site
which requires me to enter a username and password, on one computer I can
double-click the window for the username and it will have my username in
there from having entered it in the past. If I select it and tab to the
password field, it automatically inserts my password. On the other
computer, I can't get it to do that.

Under Options and Content, each computer has the Auto-Complete boxes all
checked. Under the Security tab, each seems to have the same boxes checked.
Both computers have the XP firewall turned on. There must be some option
that is specified differently on the two computers, but I can't find it.
Any ideas?

Sounds more like you have some software installed, like Google Toolbar, that
provides an auto-fill function. Double-clicking in a field does NOT yank
historical data into that field by IE. You have to start entering text for
the matches to appear. A *single* click in the field will show a drop-down
list of the historical entries available but it doesn't select one.
Double-clicking doesn't automatically enter an entry, either, even if there
is only one entry in the historical list. Double-clicking and having the
field automatically fill in some value is the function of some other
software you installed on one host and not the other.

I said it wrong. Double-clicking shows a list of previous entries in that
field (of which there is only one). I then single click on that one entry
and it puts it in the username field. I then tab to the password field and
it inserts the password. I don't get that on the other computer. As far as
I know, I don't have Google taskbar or AIM taskbar or any weird stuff like
that.

IE remembers whatever you told it to remember (if the auto-complete options
are enabled). It could be that you told IE to *not* remember the password
(i.e., it popped up a prompt and you said No). Now IE remembers that
settings will always thereafter NOT save the password for that form. You
will have to clear out the auto-complete, reenter that login page, and
answer Yes after IE prompts if you want to save that data.

Do they both have the box checked for User name and password in
tools | Internet Options | Content | AutoComplete?

Yes. That's what makes this so strange. I have tried unchecking and
re-checking those boxes, and it's as though that feature isn't working
right.

On the machine where it is not working tell it to clear passwords and then
see if it will remember.
