Is there is any way to repair IE 6 without having to reinstall Windows XP ? IE 6 is now using 100 % of my CPU power to open and run and it freezes my PC whilst opening and takes forever to initially load and run. It seems to run normally after it finally opens but sometimes still hangs. It continues to use 100 % of CPU power most of the time, like when transitioning to another web page. I have very fast DSL and still downloading files is a problem now with this messed up IE. I have scanned my hard drive multiple times with anti-virus and 4 anti-spyware programs and have found no infection of my PC. I have run the scannow program and found no problems to indicate a repair of IE is needed from the Windows installation disk. The rest of the programs on my PC seem to be running normally. I have deleted my temporary files for all accounts so they would reinstall upon reboot as that was suggested elsewhere as a possible solution if my temporary files might have been corrupted: this possible solution solved nothing but caused no further problems. I have tried to do an in place repair/reinstallation of IE from the installation disk but the process won't complete: this was a solution suggested in a PC troubleshooting book. I have searched endlessly online for helpful articles and have tried everything. Has anyone else had a similar problem and what did you do about this? I have read that you can't delete and reinstall IE 6 with Windows XP as the program is too tightly wound into XP: you can only disable IE's browser features. I downloaded the Firefox browser to try it and I love it but it still can't do everything IE can do. At least Firefox CAN be deleted and reinstalled if I develop any problems with that program ! I have refused to reinstall Windows XP over ONE program causing problems like this... is this what I'm going to wind up having to do anyway ? |

Thanks for your reply, Frank. Actually I've been reading other threads and
found some of your replies to other people and already read some of the links you provided. None of it particularly helped my situation, unfortunately. I may try to reinstall IE by doing the edit of the registry method, but I'm a little intimidated by that. I am uncomfortable with tampering with my PC's registry. And then how do I know this will really solve the problem, ya know ? I just got Hijack This, scanned my computer, don't see anything unusual in the scan log but then I'm not too sure of that. Any other thoughts ? I too seem to be exposed to the same problem, and have been following your
advice in previous threads - but with no success. From my Temporary Internett files I have noted that a file has been added with the name and adress of my home page, but with an "expiry date" added a few days (3) after "last checked". After this expiry date, the PC "hangs" when opening the home page. During the "hanging", IE6 use 98-99% of CPU capacity and it generates pages and pages of files with names like http:///?CodeDownloadErrorLog!name={2AA62E92-E009-4A0C-8B7A-02DC4216050C} The number code being different in each file. By changing the setting for the home page, IE6 appears again to run normal - but again a new file is added with the neame of the new home page - and an expiry date has been added. After this date the same hanging described above occurrs. Again a new home page appears tosolve the problem - but the story repeats itself. From this point on- both my two previous home pages "hangs"the PC. I have all the latest Windows updating, Norton internett security, Firewalls, Ad-aware, Microsoft Antispyware, etc. I have cleaned out my Temporary Internet files- note that I cannot remove all - some will make the PC hang in the same manner as above when I try to remove them. I am now installing alternative browser to IE6 to be prepared for the next level of "hanging". Are the symptomes I describe of any help - does anybody have suggestions on next steps to take?
