Default IE won't start from Start; will start from Control Panel, Auto Updates

Hi:

I'm having a problem I haven't seen described yet.

If I try to start IE6 from the start menu or from programs or from c:
\program files\internet explorer, nothing happens. Hourglass for a
couple of seconds, then nothing more.

If I open the control panel, choose automatic updates and them click on
Windows Update web Site, IE opens fine and works fine.

I'm running XP SP2.

I've tried scf /scannow with no help.

I considered uninstalling and reinstalling SP2, but I get a warning that
a long list of programs won't work if I uninstall and I don't know if
they will work after reinstall.

Do anyone know what to do?

Thanks.

Ed

Check for Hijackware:

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
