I have recently encountered problems in downloading files from the internet.
The downloads usually start very slowly and then stall at any point from 1% to 50% complete. I first encountered these problems running Windows ME but have updated to Windows XP Home. The download problems have continued. I then followed the advice in the following Microsoft article to spped up my computer. The download problem persists: Rev it up: Rediscover your PC’s youth Published: July 26, 2005 By Sandi Hardmeier I have also run updated versions of Ad-Aware SE, Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta, Spybot and Norton Internet Security 2005 with no problems detected. With the addition of these new programs, I have also uninstalled the Zone Alarm Firewall that had been previously in use as my firewall program. I have tested my high speed cable internet connection using another computer and the connection speed was fine. Any suggestions would be appreciated as I am out of ideas. The only thought I have left is to wipe my hard drive and reload windows. Happy New Year |

Hi,
Sandi's article at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/...rformance.mspx recommends clearing out the Temporary Internet Files. You might take that a step further and delete the Temporary Internet Files folder. Make sure that you can see hidden files (Folder Options> View) Then login as another user with administrator privileges, or from the machine's default administrator account (startup in safe mode) and delete the affected TIF folder from Windows Explorer. It will be at [C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files] 315222 - A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=315222 Set the size of the new TIF folder at 50-60 MB. Another possibility... Turn on the Windows Firewall (from Control Panel or Security Center) and disable Norton Internet Security (briefly- just to see if NIS is the culprit.) Hope this helps, Don [MS MVP- IE] "numbersguy" <numbersguy[at]discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:0DFF85AD-9A64-4A6A-8594-1D284F5931A8@microsoft.com... > I have recently encountered problems in downloading files from the internet. > The downloads usually start very slowly and then stall at any point from 1% > to 50% complete. Thanks for the advice. I did delete all TIF files again and look into
whether NIS created a firewall problem. Unfortunately neither of these solutions worked. Before I delete the entire TIF folder in Safe Mode, I have a question. After deleting the folder, do I simply select File/ New/ Folder from within the subdirectory and name the new folder "Temporary Internet Files" while in safe mode? Thanks for your response to my original query "Don Varnau" wrote: > Hi, > Sandi's article at > http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/...rformance.mspx > recommends clearing out the Temporary Internet Files.
