Hi Sorry this is a bit longer then most.
I am looking at a computer for a friend and frankly I have no idea what is causing the problem. Fonts in Outlook Express and Internet Explorer Favorites and certain websites the i's and L's in words are red in colour all the other letters are normal black. When I type in Microsoft Word, the lettering is fine just anything to do with Outlook Express and Internet Explorer 6. This computer has Windows XP Pro with a CRT monitor. The owner ran the Clear Type Tuning program with a Crt monitor it was after running the program that the letters changed color. The Clear Type tuning was turned off letters still show red. Clear Type Tuning was removed Still the same. I checked all the settings pertaining to fonts and they have not changed and are still the same as before she ran the program. She saw on several forums that people had used the Clear Type Tuning with a CRT and found improvement, although Microsoft recommends not doing it. I use a Benq 19 inch LED with the Clear Type Tuning. Works great, I thought I would try to duplicate her problem. I hooked up my old 17 inch CRT ran the program it didn't do much and did not cause the red i's and L's so I could not duplicate it. Has anyone had this problem, if so is their a remedy other then an XP repair or re-install. I also ran a sfc /scannow for corruptions none were found. I also took out the driver for her Nvidia GeForce video card and reinstalled an updated one no change. Anyone have any ideas open to everything and all except the obvious an XP re-install. |

I have had this 'condition' after purchasing a new Samsung LCD (915N) which has 6bit rather than the 8bit. I heard that this could effect text. BUT...I have come to the conclusion that it is the gamma setting and colour calibration. With much fiddling around retuning and adjuting the gamma with a freeware download called Quick Gamma this red tone (which I refer to as Maroon) has lessened. The worst font to display it was Comic Sans (which I was accustomed to using all the time. Arial did not display that feature) If you haven't tried adjusting the gamma and fine tuning the colour gamma it might be worth a try. After all the fiddling I have done it would be worth having one of the hardware things that pick up the gamma and colour tone. One product is called Spyder. This condition for me has been only in plain text or in the e-mail. It did not show up on web pages or in word documents or rtf text editors like Treepad. I did the Clear type Microsoft adjustment thing also which had no effect. I updated the Nvidia drivers also. I changed to navy font in the Windows appearance properties to lessen the contrast. The type of lighting in the room would emphasis or deemphasize.. Initially, in daylight it wasn't so obvious and now I figure I have the gamma set fairly close for there is minimal maroon glow on capitals as I type this. Its still there but not so obviously. For sure, it was vertical text letters and especially in capitals but not all font types. It was heartening to read your complaint although its on a CRT because I was beginning to think it was only my monitor <lol> Rose |
