Default IE extremely slow to open, then loses session after 5 minutes

Acer laptop, XP-SP2, when double-clicking on IE it is extremely slow to open.
Even the homepage after it has been cached. Once it opens it operates at
normal speed and browsing is fine. Close it and double-click IE again to
open and it is extremely slow again on startup.

Also, log into hotmail or yahoo email acct and check mail, leave window open
and stay logged in, then do something else for about 5 minutes. Come back to
mail acct and click a link (Sent Mail for example) and Page Cannot Be
Displayed appears. Hit F5 and the page comes up fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks
