Default Message Rules for Filing and Deleting

Hello,

I subscribe to a high-volume discussion list. I would like to have the
messages for that list downloaded to my local folder and then removed from
the mail server.

I have the following rules set up:

Rule 1: MyMailList

Apply this rule after the message arrives
Where the From line contains 'mymaillist.com'
Move it to the MyMailList folder

Rule 2: Copy of MyMailList

Apply this rule after the message arrives
Where the From line contains 'mymaillist.com'
Delete it from server

The rules are indeed set up in this order, MyMailList is just before Copy of
MyMailList. When mail comes in, the messages from 'mymaillist.com' are moved
to the MyMailList folder. However, they remain on the server. (As if rule #2
was not processed.)

What am I doing wrong/what is the right way to do this?

Thanks,
Bill

You don't need a rule to do this.
Outlook Express does that by default if you are using POP mail. It only
keeps a copy on the server if you expressly (ha! ha!) tell it to in Advanced
Server Options.

Well, yes...

I'll elaborate a little more:

I specify in the POP3 account Advanced settings to keep my last 10 days of
email on the server. This way I can easily use my cell phone or a web
browser to check in from any location for a recent "important" message, and
to ensure the messages aren't immediately removed if I am away from the
computer while Outlook Express is still up. I don't want to change this
behavior.

This mailing list, however, is taking up an undue amount of space, and they
are almost never "important" so I want the messages zapped immediately after
I download and file them.

I would think that "Delete it from server" would have the effect of doing
so.

Bill

I see the problem. Add the line "Stop processing more rules" at the end of
each rule and see if that fixes it.

If you choose Delete it from server, you will never see them. If you
download them and then delete them, they will be downloaded again the next
time you check for messages because you are set to keep a copy on the
server. I don't think there is any way to do what you want.

Gordon,

I appreciate the prompt responses. However I think you're answering a little
too quickly. (i.e., without thinking)

1) If I add the "stop processing more rules" option to the first rule, then
Outlook Express guaranteed will not process the second rule (Deleting the
message).

2) You cannot specify any additional processing Actions when you specify
"Delete it from Server" -- they are dimmed out. That is why I have two rules
in the first place.

Bill

p.s.: I think it's generally accepted to leave prior messages in a thread
intact in one's reply, and I notice you keep deleting them.

Bruce,

This seems a little strange.

Why have a message rule action "Delete it from server" when

a) The message will always be deleted anyway (because you do *not* have the
"Leave a copy of messages on server" option selected )

b) The message will never be deleted anyway (because you *do* have the
"Leave a copy of messages on server" option selected )

yes it will. It processes Rule 1 and then stops. It then goes directly to
processing Rule 2.
This is a common problem with multiple rules and the solution generally is
to add the "Stop" line to the end of each rule. Sounds illogical, but its
not.

Bruce,

I'm afraid as nonsensical as it is, you're right. I deleted the "Move" rule
and processed with simply the "Delete it from server" rule... and the
messages are still there.

If you choose Delete it from the server, the message should never be
downloaded regardless if Leave a copy on the server is checked, or not.
