Steve,

Ok, I just did that, but it makes me wonder how big my message database will
get. Now, if I go for a few days without checking a particular newsgroup,
it downloads a very large number of messages instead of the 300. I currenty
subscribe to 14 newsgroups (OE, Word, Access, IE, XP, etc.) but usually
don't regularly check them ... only when I have a need to solve a particular
problem. Is this going to quickly fill up my hard disk since I have no
limits on how many messages to download?

Tom

Set up a message rule to delete news messages, I use a 20 day rule.
OE>tools>message rules>
You will have to apply this rule manually, by selecting it and choose 'apply
now', either browse to a group or select the server. I also have a 5 day
rule which I apply to busier groups each week.
HTH?

And compact the folders after using the rule.

You can also right click on the folder name in the folder list and go to
Properties | Local File and click the remove headers or messages button to
clear things out. After that click on the compact button to shrink the
folder back down.

When you first go to a NG, you can have it set to download 50 headers at a
time, then go to Edit | Catch up and that will set OE to thinking its
downloaded all headers for that NG. Then uncheck the option to get xxx
headers at a time and then you will only get all the messages posted since
you did the Catch up.
