Default 0x800CCC90, 0x800CCC92 Errors

Hi folks,

I use OE6 both at home and at work. I'm getting the dreaded "unknown user
name or bad password" error, but I'm positive that I've entered them
correctly. I started getting this message a week ago. I have two different
accounts on the same server, and on two separate computers, only the one
account gives this message. The weird thing is, I'm able to log in using
our Outlook webmail server just fine on both, using the same password. It's
definitely not a password problem, but our IT people are baffled, and we
have a fantastic support group here. My setting are also exactly the same
on both accounts.

Anyone faced with this same dilemma? Below is the message. Any help would
be greatly appreciated!

Carrie

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was
rejected. Account: 'XXXX', Server: 'pop.XXXXX.edu', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '-ERR Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.', Port:
995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Could be a damaged identity. I have not used a "Main Identity" in MS
Outlook Express for a couple of years, now. When I first set up MSOE, I
create a spanking new Identity, then switch to it. After that, I delete the
"Main Identity". Never use it, just delete it.

What you might try is to create a new Identity, then test it. If it works,
import all of the messages from the old Identity. Once you have all of your
old messages in the new Identity, just delete the old Identity.

Look for posts by Bruce Hagen on the problems of keeping messages in the
five MSOE created folders: Inbox.dbx, Outbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx, Deleted
Items.dbx, and Drafts.dbx. It is best to move messages to folders you have
created for that purpose as soon as possible.

Also, if you are using Windows XP, there are some tricks pertaining to the
auto compacting of folders introduced with that OS. I don't have a Windows
XP OS, so I am only peripherally aware that there is a problem; I don't
know the solution for that, but it has been posted several times in the
past; probably within the retention window of msnew.microsoft.com.

Thanks very much for your response -- that didn't do it, and nobody here at
my university seems to know what's the problem, either! I will just keep
looking.

Possible problem with encryption? BTW are you sure that the server
expects SSL? You would definitely get something like this symptom if not.

Otherwise, try using the repair procedure offered here:

<title>KB813444 - How to troubleshoot situations where you cannot complete
MSN sign-up or connect to SSL secured (128-Bit) Web sites
by using Internet Explorer in Windows XP</title>

If you are getting good cooperation from your host support
ask what diagnostics they can invoke on their side.
Unfortunately tracing SSL on the client side is problematic.
The best you can do is use this tool (and I'm not even sure
that OE authentication would necessarily follow this path):

<title>KB307272 - How To Trace ServerXMLHTTP Calls Using
the Winhttptracecfg Tracing Tool in XML</title>

Another possibility on a totally different tack, also requiring
analysis on your host side, is to wonder if the message should
be taken literally or just an indication that you are having problems
logging on. E.g. one conceivable case would be that your
symptom occurs mostly in a reconnection scenario; then,
what if only the client half of the connection is disconnected
and the server still thinks there is a connection; when you try
to reconnect what does the server do? (OR, similarly, what does
the server do if multiple concurrent logon attempts to the same
account are made from multiple locations?) The first scenario
would be more likely to occur if the IP address of the client is not fixed.
Etc.
