Default Odd returned email message

Today I have recieved several "unable to deliver email" messages that seem to
relate to emails to people that I don't know and emails that I have not sent.
In the "to" line my email address is given as MacInyart instead of the
correct macinyart. I cannot find any odd emails in my "sent items" folder
and, in fact, I don't know any of the socalled reipients of the emails that
are being returned. I have not opened the email that is returned, but the
subject is "hi i've a new email address". If any of you have ideas about
this I would be grateful. I am running Norton Internet Security with email
scanning for viruses on both incoming and outgoing emails. On the surface it
looks as if someone is spoofing my email address? Thanks.

You are correct: Someone is spoofing your address for spam, or someone that
has your address on their computer is infected with a spam worm.
Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do, but delete these messages and
hope that it ends soon.
You can write a mail rule to move this type mail to the deleted items folder
as soon as it comes in.

Most likely a Trojan (e.g., Sober.x, Sober.y) on another machine has
"harvested" your email address and is using it to perpetuate itself to other
machines (spoofing). Delete any such messages, unread.

BTW your chosen way to "munge" your email address when posting to the
newsgroups is ineffective. Trojan's "know" how to strip out the
'(remove_this)' part. Try something like nameREMOVE@THISisp.com or
nothanks@notanisp.net.

The address quoted as been used without any munging between June 2002 & Oct
2003, that is why you are getting the spam.

Those can be one of 4 things:
1) Some spammer is sending the original messages and using your e-mail
address as the sender.
2) Someone else has a PC infected with a virus and the virus is sending
itself as the original message and using your e-mail address as the
sender.
3) The message is the virus itself, pretending to be a returned mail.
4) Your PC is infected with a virus and it has been sending itself. And
this is really a returned mail that your PC sent. (This can be the case
even if the originals are not in your Sent Items. Viruses often bypass
your mail client and write directly to the mail server.)

In cases 1, 2, and 3 above, the messages are not coming from your PC and
are not going through your e-mail account. There's nothing you can do
to prevent anyone from sending an e-mail with your e-mail address as the
From header, just as you can't prevent anyone from sending a postal mail
and putting your name and address as the return address. At this point
all you can do is filter out the messages. Your ISP may offer some
filtering at the mail server.

To make sure that case 4 above is not the cause, you should check your
PC with an updated anti-virus program.

The best way to "mung" an email address is to just create a bogus email
address. Use the Top Level Domain (TLD) ".invalid", which has been
reserved for use in "real world testing" of email addresses. If you need
to give out a working email address in Usenet posts, put a disposable
email address in the "Reply-To:" box.

Something like <macinyart.doesn't@spam.invalid> is a better email
address than any munged email address.
