I have OE 6 with windows xp and Avast as my antivirus with the Win xp
firewall enabled. This a.m. I was unable to receive new messages - every thing worked great last night and I am perplexed. Here is what occurs when I try to receive new mail: I see the receiving mail notice i the task bar and also see the progress window and bar which shows that mail is being received , but then everything hangs and the progress bar stops 1/2 way through and a windows pops up telling me that that the email server has failed to respond, then another window popup tells me some errors have occured while processing the request- the error details tells me a time out has occured with the server. I have contacted my ISP - Comcast and they are having no connectivity or server problems - which I can confirm as I can access my daughter's email when I go to her account identity on the same POP3 server. I can also access my mail if I go to Comcast's web mail. I haven't recently installed any new programs and have tried to access my mail with the Avast antivirus program inactivated - still get the same probem so I know the problem is with my email identity account. The Comcast rep gave me a new password and I tried that but to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions or guidance on what me be causing this problem. Thanks in advance Frank |

Thanks for the response, Frank. I get the same error message when attempting to receive new messages with my Avast antivirus turned off. Here is the pop-up message I receive after the 'receiving mail' progress bar hangs about 1/3 to 1/2 across: "A time-out occurred while communicating with the Server Account 'mail comcst.net(1), Server'mail comcast.net,Protocol POP3, Port 110, Secure(SSL):No, Error number 0x800CCC19" As mentioned the problem appears to be with my account identity on OE 6 on my Win XP (HE) pc - my daughter is able access her comcast email on her pc with her account identity and I can access my comcast email via web mail on their home page. If you still have the problem with e-mail scanning turned off, I suspect
there is a large message that can't be downloaded. Go to Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced and move the Time-out slider to the right. (5 minutes). If it still does not download: If you have WebMail service at your ISP's Website, go there and delete it. If you do not have WebMail access, create a message rule. Where the message size is more than size Delete it from the server Click on Size and select 50KB. OK | Apply Now | Select the new rule | Apply Now. You might want to save the rule for future use, but uncheck it so it isn't active. If still no joy, you may also have this problem if your Inbox is heavily loaded. Move any mail you wish to save to a local folder you create. Then: Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer. In WindowsXP, 2K & 3K, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options | View. With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Inbox.dbx} and delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE. Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "ECLiPSE 2002" <fdm2000@comcast.net> wrote in message news:765mo1lced0ne0b4a6emu8rvc540cl8t85@4ax.com... > > Thanks for the response, Frank. > > I get the same error message when attempting to receive new messages > with my Avast antivirus turned off. You receive time-out error 0x8004210a or 0x800ccc19 when you view a POP3 e-mail account with antivirus software installed: http://support.microsoft.com/default...Product=ol2002 Also, if the info you provide below is correct, you have the wrong setting for your POP3 server; it should be "mail.comcast.net" with a period between each word and no space. Thanks for responding Jim, I have the correct name and setting for my POP3 server - it was a typo in my earlier message. I don't believe that my Avast antivirus software is responsible - I've used it for many months with no problem and I have disabled it to see if I could access my mail but to no avail. To check if the problem is on your end (your computer) or with the ISP, try
using telnet to connect to the mail server. You can find Telnet instructions at: http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_san...pop3telnet.htm Go to a Command window and type the following: telnet {pop3 server name} 110 - hit enter, don't type the brackets. user {your username} - hit enter pass {your password} - hit enter There are various commands available: list (will return all messages) retr (whatever number will retrieve that message) dele (+ number will delete that number message) If you can successfully complete a telnet session and connect to the mail server while in a command line box, the problem is not with the ISP, but with some 3rd party program such as an antivirus program or an antispam program interfering with Outlook Express' ability to connect to the server. The only way to be sure is to disable their ability to remain in the startup axis by using msconfig (Start/Run and type: msconfig and then click the Startup tab and disable), then reboot making sure that no portion of the program is running in the background, then test Outlook Express again. If it works now (as it should have earlier in a telnet session) then you've identified the culprit. The fact that you may have been using a program for some time does not mean that a recent update may have made it a problem for you now. Every antivirus program is updated frequently (the best ones are updated daily w/o user intervention) so the program is in constant flux. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped.
