Hi, these questions I wanted to ask for a long long time. Let tell a bit the
background first: I used to have a previous version (I don't remember which version) of Outlook Express 6 which was pre-installed in the factory when I bought this computer since 1998; I used this previous version to receive and send e-mail until Angust 2004 and upgraded to Outlook Express 6 since then when Autoupdate asked me to; when I upgraded to Outlook Express 6 on 27 August 2004, I found nothing in the Inbox, Outbox and Outbox Backup Copies, I simply lost thousands of my e-mails from the previous version of Outlook Express! My questions are: How can I recover the e-mails messages from the previous version of Outlook Express 6 in my computer (Windows 98)? Where can I find them? Are all my e-mails received and sent prior to install Outlook Express 6 lost? Anything you can do to fix this problems? Please advise. Some of the e-mails are very important to me. |

Hi tintin,
If a new OE identity was created with the OE upgrade then the old message store should still be available. This Microsoft KB article tells how to find and recover the messages. OLEXP: Mail Folders, Address Book, and E-mail Messages Are Missing After You Upgrade to Microsoft Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp A backup strategy is needed if there are messages you don't want to lose. OLEXP: How to Back Up and Recover Outlook Express Data http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;270670 More information and options Get OETool (www.oehelp.com/OETool/) and OEQB (www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/) and put them in the same directory. Then there is a button in OETool that will run OEQB and backup to 3 levels of redundancy just with a click of the button. Both are free. Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store folder will reveal the location of
your current Identity's store. Write it down. [In WindowsXP & 2K, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start>Control Panel>Folder Options>View.] In Windows Explorer, search for .DBX files (WinKey+F; *.dbx). Any found which are not located in your current store will most likely be those from your pre-Aug 04 identity. You can Import them using File > Import>Messages.... If it's Win98 (not Win98SE) and you were still running IE/OE4 in Aug-04, search for .MBX and .IDX files (*.mbx; *.idx). These are the old OE4 files. Follow these steps exactly to import the OE4 data into OE6: http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/faqs/how.htm#importOE4 General OE Caveats: - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [N/A in WinXP SP2 and Win2K03] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm. - Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 & Win2K03 only). - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Security, Shell/User) tintin wrote: > Hi, these questions I wanted to ask for a long long time.
