Default email problem

I am using blueyonder, OE 6.0, Window xp, have sygate firewall.

I very rarely get my email to download immediately and can take several
attempts before I recieve it. When I experience these problems I can access
newsgroups ok and also access web pages ok. So I am thinking maybe I have
not got my `settings` not properly set for email.

Any ideas
thanks

If your settings were incorrect, you would never get it. Do you get any
error messages when you try to receive?

Turn off e-mail scanning in your Anti-Virus program. You will still be
protected. Make sure Windows Firewall is disabled. Two firewalls running can
cause problems.

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move
your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no
folders are open. Then: File>Work Offline (or double click Working Online in
the Status Bar). File>Folder>Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

This is the message I regularly get.

A time-out occurred while communicating with server
pop3 blueyonder.co.uk
protocol pop3
port 110
secure (SSL)
error no 0x800CCCG

This means nothing to me as I got someone to set up my PC.

I have already turned off email scanning in anti virus programme
I have my own folders for certain emails
and I do every few weeks compact my folders

How do I disable windows firewall?

thanks

To turn off the Windows firewall, go to the Control Panel and open it.

As for your error message, did you copy/paste it? I show no reference for
the error number 0x800CCCG. Check your settings in Tools | Accounts | Mail
| Properties | Servers to ensure they are correct. Contact Blueyonder if
need be. I don't know what they should be, but only having blueyonder.co.uk
seems strange.

Error 0x800ccc0d or 0x800ccc0f or 0x800ccc19 when Receiving or Sending
E-Mail
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813514

Turn off the e-mail scanning in your anti-virus.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...921552806?Open

You are still protected:
http://snipurl.com/bmf6

If you have an Anti-Spam program, that can also be the cause of the error.

The Windows Firewall is not causing the problem. Don't disable it unless
you've installed and enabled a third-party firewall.

Your current Identity may have been damaged by the email scanning (or
antispam), especially if its the default Main Identity. Try one or more of
your accounts in a new Named Identity (File>Identities>Add new identity).
Assuming all is well, import messages from the old Identity before deleting
it (File>Identities>Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.
