Default Emails disappearing when moving to "saved" files


On Nov 15, I posed a question about e-mails disappearing, and I received the
answer from Bruce Hagen, partly this:
"How large are these folders? If you have exceeded 100MB, create more
folders for archiving and don't put any more in the ones you have problems
with. It may be a good idea to move some of the messages out of them."
This worked great: as soon as I deleted a bunch of saved files, I was back
in business!
My question is: does the 100 MG apply to each folder, and how can you tell
the size of each one so it can be cut down?

In theory, a folder should hold up to 2GB, but many people were having
problems long before they reached that size. I don't recall when it started,
but we all pretty much agree that a 100MB limit keeps you safe.

For your question, all folders, (including subfolders), can safely hold
100MB. It is recommended that the default folders, Inbox, Sent Items, etc.
be kept as free of space as possible.

Each folder, and subfolder has its own dbx file which will reveal its size.
You can find them in the message store, (and create a shortcut there if you
wish).

Tools>Options>Maintenance>Store folder will reveal the location
of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start>Run>Ctrl+V will put the location
in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the
location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WindowsXP, 2K & 3K, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start>Control Panel>Folder
Options>View.

Remember, the file size will not become smaller when you delete messages
until you compact your folders.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File>Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status
Bar).
File>Folder>Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting
is completed.

And to be safe, because you never know when something may happen, backup OE
frequently.
