'EY all, I have a favorite NG and I love OE6 for news groups, best free program. But I am curious as to the time-outs on the .DBX files concerning saved threads and the needed info in them, maybe some threads are way old, yeah? Many of my saved threads, or, "watched" threads have disappeared! Too many. It is obvious that all that info is STILL there because of the file size, being about 46.8 megabytes! And all of it is text! I think OE has no beeswax timing them out at all, and I wonder, is there any way to open the older info in the file? Or decode it? It cannot be done, as far as I know, using OE. I would love to do that and save what I need to the HD you know... any help much appreciated. TIA, -- Giant_Alex cravdraa_at-yahoo_dot-com Not my site: http://www.e-sword.net/ |

When the messages are removed from the server, you won't see them anymore.
This particular newsgroup is 90 days. Have you been compacting your folders? The size you mention would indicate you are not. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File>Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File>Folder>Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. If you want to save newsgroup messages, drag them to a folder you create in the folder tree. Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "AAvK" <noway@yourprob.com> wrote in message news:eBqazJW$FHA.2264@tk2msftngp13.phx.gbl... > > 'EY all, I have a favorite NG and I love OE6 for news groups, best free > program. > But I am curious as to the time-outs on the .DBX files concerning saved > threads > and the needed info in them, maybe some threads are way old, yeah? You can compress from here, it's probably better if you have lots of wasted space/large file to compress them this way (individually) or you may suffer freezes and message losses if you try on them all. Different newsgroups have different retention times for the messages on their servers from a few days up to a few month- this is up to the host service not your program or microsoft. For your user options look in Tools Options Maintenance in OE. |
