Default I'm stumped on OE6 Problem

WinXP Pro 32 bit auto updated, AMD Athlon 64 +2800 3 months old system;
system behind SMC router; use Norton AntiVirus 2005 & ZoneAlarm Pro; ran fine
until I IMPORTed second batch of backed up OE6 e-mails. (First backup just
handled files going back about 6 months; second picked up files going back
several years.) 1st IMPORT went fine and has been used for a month. 2nd
IMPORT went fine until COMPACT ALL FILES stopped at SENT FILES with an OE
error message "Some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks.
Please review the list below for more details" The green bar below is
complete. The Errors Tab is active and empty. The Tasks Tab says "Send 1
message(s) using '((my pop account))', Status says 'warning' and connection
has local area network. (I get this same message whenever I try to compact.)
I then went back to working and find that OE6 will keep SENDing every e-mail
I create or forward. SPAM central. The e-mail stays in the OUTBOX and
cannot be MOVED to another file. It must be DELETEd.
I've done all sorts of things and checked with some usually knowledgeable
folks but nada. I really need help. In going down the check lists I have
discovered that I have a file named nwiz.exe which could be legitemate NVIDIA
or could be bogus. It is not in a location where NVIDIA says it should be.
But even when dropped from STARTUP I have the OE6 issue. I also have worked
my way down Tim Koch's excellent article on OE6 toolkit, getting a different
error in COMPACT during SENT FILES: "OE: The folder is currently in use by
OE or by another application." There shouldn't be.
WHAT is the cleanest state possible to try again?
Following Tim's article further he recommends RUNning 'regsver32' to
re-write a number of DLLs. Neither in RUN nor in SEARCH (with all the hidden
and folder options selected) do I find "regsver32".
Should I have regsver32, how do I get it (back?), is it a likely problem?
Sorry for the verbosity. This message would be 3X longer if I added all the
steps I have taken.

Create a new Identity.
This will let you send and receive.
In the old Identity, what size are the dbx files?
Your Sent Items must be corrupt.

Default Re: I'm stumped on OE6 Problem

Start here and post back with your results.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. You will still be
protected.

Clear the Temporary Internet Files. In IE>Tools>Internet Options>
Delete Files button. And check the box to Delete Offline content.

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move
your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no
folders are open. Then: File>Work Offline (or double click Working Online in
the Status Bar). File>Folder>Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

In Tools>Options>Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

I think you are on to something. In checking C:///My Mail *dbx I get 4.96
GIGAbytes as the size. That prolix I am not! I find the expected
foldername.dbx files but also "copy (2) of foldername.dbx", Copy (3) of
foldername.dbx, Copy (4) of foldername.dbx, Copy of foldername.dbx. What is
the next step? I do have the backup files but the last several months are
not in them. (They are on a different backup however.)

Let me work through Ron's observations and see what transpires. Then I'd
like to take a look at your recommendations to see what I should incorp[orate
into my normal procedures.

Are you being forced to compact?
Can you still access the emails in Sent Items?

Does it actually say "copy (2) of foldername.dbx" or does it say
foldername(2).dbx?

First create new folders and transfer emails out of the current folders.
Do not let any of the new folders get over 100MB.

The dbx files in your backups may have problems too if they weren't
compacted before backing up.

I've been off-line for a week or so. Sorry.
Is it okay to delete .dbx files with "copy (2) of foldername"? Okay to
delete foldername(2) ? I'd like to keep most of the data --- and can search
it now that GOOGLE has provided a very nice indexer, but it seems to require
the files to be connected to OE. Yes? Otherwise, can I just start an archive
folder for the older OE dbx files and disconnect them from OE? Does this
make sense? How would I do that?

The one with the highest number may be the one OE is using. Look at the
dates of the files. The DBX file date is updated everytime OE opens the
folder.
