I was able to configure my Outlook Express on the server. The other 2
computers connected to the server can browse the internet but the Outlook Express could not be configured. I am getting the message "The host 'mail.chrysalishrd.com' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'mail.chrysalishrd.com', Server: 'mail.chrysalishrd.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11004, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D" The POP3 and SMTP address mentioned is same as in the server. What could be the problem. In the current scenario, everyone uses the server to check the mails. I am not able to configure the same for the two individual computers. Please help. |

Outlook Express is not designed to run on a server.
From another post: Set up an IMAP server on one of the computers. I use Mercury Mail: http://www.pmail.com/overviews/ovw_mercury.htm Use the computer which is mostly always on; it will have to be on for the times when you access the other computer. Set up the Mercury Mail POP3 Distributing client to fetch your email from your POP3 servers. They will be kept on the disk of the computer running Mercury Mail. Set up the Mercury Mail IMAP4 server. Log in from whichever computer you are on using your favorite IMAP capable email program; MS Outlook Express works just fine this way. None of the other modules need to be selected. -- Norman -- Ron Sommer "Surya Iyer" <Surya Iyer@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:3E094BA1-A377-4D0B-9E5E-874D9F6740C0@microsoft.com... >I was able to configure my Outlook Express on the server. Turn off email scanning in your anti-virus. It provides no added protection. The Other E-Mail Threat: File Corruption in Outlook Express Published: November 18, 2004 By Tom Koch http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/...orruption.mspx Email scanning slows down Sending and Receiving, sometimes enough that OE times out. Since some of the received messages have large (often virus) attachments, which exasperates the problem. Some Comcast users have found it necessary to totally uninstall Norton and switch to the free AVG with mail scanning off. Norton invented email scanning and here's what they say: "Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions." http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...256c7500723cf0 "...your computer is protected if Auto-Protect is enabled. Auto-Protect scans any incoming files, including email attachments, when the files are saved to your hard drive." http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01100907323806 "NAV provides multiple layers of protection. Email scanning is just one of those layers. Even if you are not running Email Scanning, your computer is protected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments by NAV Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect will scan any incoming files, including email attachments, as they are saved to your hard drive. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions." http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...= bar_sch_nam See also http://help.expedient.com/mailnews/n...ntivirus.shtml So Symantec used to say this often and clearly. The newer stuff doesn't have the statement included as it was considered an embarrassment. If you know anyone who programs for Norton try to get them to talk about it. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE Please respond in Newsgroup only. What mail server application are you using? Also, how is your LAN configured for Internet access? On my LAN (I am the guy who uses Mercury, whose article was cited by Ron Sommer), local access by MS Outlook Express is not accomplished using "aosake.net:110", but by using the NetBIOS computer name, "Megumi". If my SpeedStream 4100 DSL modem is configured to pass a private IP address to the router, a "loopback" connection (i.e., Telnet to "aosake.net:110") will fail. Since Mercury is actually listening at 192.168.102.100:110, not at 71.131.229.228:110, it works best for a LAN connected mail client to use "Megumi:110", or 192.168.102.100:110 for POP3 checks. OTOH, Pegasus Mail, a very slick mail client, when running in a network with Mercury/32, doesn't even need to have a mail server configured; properly installed, it knows the location of the Mercury/32 message store, and access it directly. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |
