In the message rule, "where subject line contains specific words" I want it
to delete the message if ANY of the words I list show up but that option is grayed out. So, in order for the message to be deleted, ALL of the words I list must show up. How can I ungray that option? Don |

You won't be able to use it that way as the message has to be read to detect those words, hence it must be downloaded which Delete From Server doesn't do. You would use "Delete It" and "Stop Processing More Rules" instead (the latter if the mesage meets all criteria). Any message where it has to detect words in the body of the message or an attachment have to be downloaded first to be checked. The rest of the message rules work on the headers of the message. |

Hi Don,
I don't know the reason for this behavior, but do notice that some of my rules exhibit the grayed-out option 2. Even though it's a bit bothersome can you create a new, replacement rule using option 2? -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim MS-MVP - Outlook Express Lynnwood, WA * "Don" <dmcglynn@alltel.net> wrote in message news:6643c$43a0a7f7$a6664287$14198@ALLTEL.NET... Hi Tim,
Both options under option 2 are grayed out so can't use either one. And since it is my understanding that OE is only set up to allow rules applying to the FROM...TO...CC...and SUBJECT lines and not the MESSAGE BODY it makes it very difficult to set up a rule to delete spam. The SUBJECT line seems to be the easiest to apply a rule to if it contains specific words...BUT...the way it looks to me is that all dozen or so words that I'd like to screen for have to appear in the message SUBJECT line in order for the rule to work. If I could make the rule say "if ANY of these words appear" then delete the message it woiuld be great Someone out there must know the answer. Thanks for the reply.. Don here...hold the presses...I just discovered how to UNGRAY option #2.
The key is to type a single word in the rule description section and then click ADD...then type another single word and click ADD again and so forth until all the words you want screened are entered and ADDED...then click OPTIONS and the option #2 will not be grayed out and the word OR will appear between all the words and the rule works! Amazing! Problem solved. Good work, Don. Terms need to be entered one at a time without any spaces.
If memory serves, more than one term could be added at a time in OE4 by using commas. -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim MS-MVP - Outlook Express Lynnwood, WA * "Don" <dmcglynn@alltel.net> wrote in message news:cd844$43a0be22$a6664287$20481@ALLTEL.NET... Seems like it was discovered by someone testing a way to add a space to one rule in some form and ended up having to edit it with regedit into the value. You and Kuay Tim are the only ones I've seen with it this way. Personally mine doesn't gray out when doing multiple words. Now I'm wondering, how many words did you add and in what form? |
