hi there,
Internet explorer 6 on windows xp when i open ie6 to a blank home page it opens ok. then when i click on any favorite or link it will open a 2nd window with an error message that "Windows cannot open the '(null)' blah blah etc. I have tried resetting the folder file assocciatins url:internet shortcut which is where i believe the problem lies but to no avail. Windows explorer is ok. no trouble there. if i try and open any file like from my favoroites file in administrator i get the same problem. It seems to be opening too many windows and the first one is allways an error message, then it will sit there blank while in the second ie opening window there is the web site opening ok. So i then have 3 open internet explorer windows open on the taskbar. The original blank window that i started with, the second window that had come up with the missing error and then the third window that has only the required site. i did load and remove demo nero 7 and it was after this that the problem started. any clues please. i have fried removeing and manually adding the url:internet shortcut, making the open command and not using dde. it allways adds the %1 on to the command like and if dde is selected as originally it was then there is a ,,%1,,,, in the de details. i have tried to regsvr the dll's and urlmon dll which they all appear to do ok. i have removed and then installed a backup reg file from another pc. root/http/shell/open section still getting the same message. oh help. Thanks. |

Run Hijack and see what all it shows. Got to be something starting with Windows, check the Services as well. Have been hearing of people wishing they hadn't installed version 7. I'm sticking to version 6 for awhile longer to let them weed out the bugs. |

i noticed that some url's that used to work okb4 this problem occured
will open a window, show an error message, then open another window and eventually hang the computer from too many windows opening. Only way to stop this occuring is to right click the group of windows and close the lot. Dammed improvements! might go back to dos! i could control that! |

Still nothing that could be releated to the problem as far as i can see. I also deleted all downloaded files in ie6 from tools/manage addons. thanks for the thoughts anyway. Min |

I downloaded and tried this program "iefix.exe" superposed to fix a
corrupt ie program. IEFix (Version 1.5) Author : Ramesh Srinivasan Web Site: http://windowsxp.mvps.org It made a few changes and now my problem has changed. It had changed the message from not finding the (Null) to not finding the application! So i removed made firefox the default browser then uninstalled it, then ran this iefix again and then had to add my own default action for URL:internet shortcut and it appears to ne 95% fixed. No messages but if i open IE6 which is set for a blank page at first, then click on a link it opens a new window for that link instead of opening the link in that all ready opened window. Apart from that minor problem the rest seems to work ok. Thanks for all attempts to help me repair this problem. cheers mates. Min |

Ok so its time to get serious as much tinkering with url:internet
shortcut and etc had now added another problem. Ok its time for upgrade from the original xp disk/ yes that worked and amazingly i cant believe how much it has kept. Most programs are installed and work fine. email works and all accounts work fine and my internet explorer works fine as well/ only had to reload the network card and sound drivers. Oh well its all 100% a1 again.... (spoke too soon@! after 3 days aof all ok,. not installing or remving anything and problem has come back. Open IE6 and a warning windo windows cant find '(null)' and etc.... then another window opens and it does contain the correct link. any link clicked on from within that window works ok/ The other option is to load firefox and make that the default browser. it doesnt suffer from the problem at all. Goodby IE6..... I am sick of you. |
