One of the references provided in this newsgroup was to a paper by Tom Koch. In that paper he suggested keeping the inbox, outbox, and sent folders to less than 1000 messages, to avoid a variety of problems. Does it follow logically, or otherwise, that it is a good idea to limit ALL email folders to less than 1000 messages, to avoid the same problems? Thanks. -- ---------- CWLee "I appreciate those who walk out from the edges with torches or even in the dark with their hands out in front of them. We need those explorers and weirdos. Inbox, Outbox and Sent Items are special folders in that way, that they pretty often get new messages, messages moved and deleted. Everytime such a thing happens, there is a chance of corrupting the data file. Otherwise, with folders that mostly are used for storing and reading messages, it is not that likely. However, if you don't mind the effort, it certainly won't be to your disadvantage. As is a regular backup and compaction of all folders. ;-) Saludos Roland -- Probleme mit OE? As Roland suggested, it's not a bad idea, partly because if you create your own folders with some kind of logic behind which folders you put messages in then it makes it a lot easier to find a particular message when you need to. Also, the larger a folder is the slower it is to load and the more apt to be corrupted. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE Please respond in Newsgroup only. Its not so much the number of messages, but the size of the file.
Some idiot emailed me a 9 meg email the other day. If I had 1000 9 meg emails, then that would overdose OE. Its best to keep the files under a couple hundred megabytes and keep backups. steve "CWLee" <cdubyalee@post.harvard.edu> wrote in message news:uWU$qJVAGHA.204@TK2MSFTNGP15.phx.gbl... > > One of the references provided in this newsgroup was to a > paper by Tom Koch. General OE Caveats:
- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm. - Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only). - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), Aumha.org VSOP, DTS-L.org CWLee wrote: > One of the references provided in this newsgroup was to a > paper by Tom Koch.
