I was told in order to selectively backup Outlook Express email files, I
should go to folder under Tools -> Options -> Maintenance -> Store Folder, and copy and paste the dbx files that I needed. And back these up. When I came to restoring dbx files backup using this process, it was not took a very long time, and I would describe it as a work around. What would be the best process for selectively backing up and restoring dbx files? |

Copy the dbx file (drag and drop is a lot faster) from the message store folder to the backup folder. That's all that is needed. BUT should you want to do more, yes I do mean more and this isn't a 60 second sale either. I'm gonna drop the low price of FREE even lower to free. You can get a FREE program (unlike one that will be offered by someone who does nothing but advertise a product that cost$ and provides absolutely no help in the newsgroups, all they do is look for messages to reply to so they can spam their program ) that is available at http://www.oehelp.com Note this one is FREE. It's always been free. What it will backup is: the message stores (dbx files) the registry settings for the current user (stored within the Identites backup folder should multiple Identites be used) the complete Identities subkey which includes message rules, blocked senders, etc for all Identities in the user profile (Windows logon). the Address Book I think that's it but I have another one tucked away that clones Idenitities, creates Identities, exports messages rules to Text or HTML for viewing (should you want to keep up with it), change resgistry settings (OE closed of course) and I don't recall what all of it does but it's a lot more than anything else you'll find and if I could generate enough support for putting it back online for additional testing, I might just do that in time for Christmas (yes I said the word, Christmas and not to offend anyone, if offended, tough, I'm 6 foot and 215 lbs of meanness) It's a backup program. which means it backs up the files to a folder you set (even works on a flashdrive from what I was told) which should not be confused with something to move the data to another computer *but can be done if you know the secret handshake. A backup of the message stores will not contain any new messages that were received AFTER the last backup. When backing up and restoring, be sure to use the same Identity or OE won't recognize the messages (that's OE's fault not mine) and should you need to restore old files, the program does that too. And did I mention it's Free. No charge. Just download and install. It comes three different ways: Complete installation package with Visual Basic 6 runtimes should they not be installed Installation with out VB6 Runtimes if you already have them installed. Just the stand alone .exe file that you can run from anyway, no installation required if you have the VB6 runtimes installed. Installation packages create Start menu shortcuts and VB6 runtimes (if needed). And while at the OEHelp site, grab the OETool which adds additional buttons to the toolbar (one of them a quick backup). I know the author (it's his web site), it's a good FREE tool. That's right, we're giving those two products away for FREE. If you want to know more before proceeding with a FREE download, email me, just change the .oops with .com in my email address and put the words OEBackuip in the subject line (so I can see it from the spam that still comes thru) and I'll be happy to talk to you about it. |
