I'm familiar with using message rules to filter my mail. I'm trying to
set up a new message rule to use the option of "Do not download from the server". However, when I create the message rule, it says "Apply this rule after the message arrives".. How can I apply the rule _before_ the message is downloaded? Thanks! MikeB |

After the message arrives = Arrives at the server, not in your Inbox.

Bruce Hagen wrote: > After the message arrives = Arrives at the server, not in your Inbox. D'oh!! Lol, as if I would expect Rules to function before the message arrives? Now that muddies things up. I have a number of rules, the last of which transfers all of my mail to a user-defined folder so that no mail is left in the Inbox. The rule I'm having difficulty with is the 2nd rule in a long list. It is set to not download a particular set of messages. These messages are all in my inbox, meaning, in my understanding, that they were processed by the rule in question, but by no other rule, not even the rule that routes all other mail away from the Inbox. Any advice? |

Rules have to be in a logical order. Put the rule to move your mail to a
specific folder at the top. Stop processing more rules probably should not be checked for this rule. The second rule. Is it a Message Body rule? Delete it from server, and Do not download from server only work on To, CC, From, Subject and size. The best you can do for a Message Body rule is Delete it & Stop processing more rules. If your rule is do not download, then you should also have stop processing
more rules. -- Ron Sommer <MPBrede@gmail.com> wrote in message news:1134681637.034715.105580@g14g2000cwa.googlegr oups.com... > > Bruce Hagen wrote: >> After the message arrives = Arrives at the server, not in your Inbox. > > D'oh!! From http://www.insideoe.com/tips/rules.htm
"Because it moves messages, the rule requires the "stop processing" action. If that is omitted, a message might fit the condition (it has an attachment) but it will be tested against all following rules, and so will never be moved to the Attachments folder. " The move rule should be one of the last rules. You should remove spam before moving to a folder. -- Ron Sommer "Bruce Hagen" <Nospam@mymail.invalid> wrote in message news:ODH5l8bAGHA.4080@TK2MSFTNGP14.phx.gbl... > Rules have to be in a logical order. - The Actions "Delete from Server" and "Do Not Download" can only test
information in the message header (FROM, TO, CC, SUBJECT, message size). If you test text in the message body or "has attachment", the message must be download first for this test, negating the action. Also, these must be the first rules in your list, or a preceding one may cause the message to download. (Warning: "Do Not Download" should be a temporary rule. If you just leave messages on the server, eventually your server mail account will fill and you'll not receive any new mail.) -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm <MPBrede@gmail.com> wrote in message news:1134681637.034715.105580@g14g2000cwa.googlegr oups.com... > > Bruce Hagen wrote: >> After the message arrives = Arrives at the server, not in your Inbox. > > D'oh!! You can't. Do not download can't have Stop processing more rules.

The first link did the trick. From there I found the problem. My spam filltering rule (ahead of the "do not download" rule) was checking the message body. I switched them around and everything is working just fine. Mike |

I switched rules and now the messages don't download. My server account will never fill up - it is a gmail account and I want to leave certain mailing lists only in the gmail account and not download it into OE. I've routed my usual address to gmail and now use gmail as my POP. Works great and the spam filtering is excellent, now I'm not downloading that horde of spam to filter it on my PC - gmail filters it out before downloading. Mike |
