What is the entire error message? Is this a Pop3 account, or Hotmail? There

Hi Jeff,
This error can occur for many reasons. It would help to know under what circumstances the error occurs. Here are things to try to resolve the issue. "This may be related to a POP up blocker or some type of program like AdSubtract which employs a proxy to block web ads." Try a different connection setting Tools, Accounts, Mail Account Properties, Connection tab Always connect to this account using (not meant for a normal Internet connection) Check this setting in ALL Outlook Express mail and news accounts. -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim MS-MVP - Outlook Express Lynnwood, WA * "Jeff" <jeff@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:77F73FDE-C89F-4D29-84D0-C73C0EC70D9A@microsoft.com... Here's the entire message, I'm editing out my e-mail address, nobody is going
to abuse that, too much spam as it is. An unknown error has occurred. Server: 'pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x80004005 Its a POP3 account. Well excuse me, it must have been Inbox.dbx but I just looked on the Microsoft Website for Support and it says to search for Inbox.mbx so that must not be true that it doesn't exist. Here's the text: Right-click the Inbox.mbx file that appears, and then click Rename When I try to receive e-mail, I get that error message stated above. Please help, nothing is working. Most recently I tried to repair Windows XP with this CD I had as a backup, it did nothing but waste my time. There is still the error when I try to receive e-mails in Outlook Express. MBX is the file name for OE4. What are you using? OE | Help | About |
msoe.dll. If you are using OE4, then you have a damaged Inbox. I doubt this because System Restore was never available with an OS that used OE4. Let's try this, because it wont hurt anything. (And when you post back, include your OS and all other pertinent info). Move any mail you wish to save out of your Inbox to a local folder you create. Then: Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer. In WindowsXP, 2K & 3K, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options | View. With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Inbox.dbx} and delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE. Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Jeff" <jeff@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:127875C1-E494-4268-B99F-1BA604F28F6C@microsoft.com... > Here's the entire message, I'm editing out my e-mail address, nobody is > going > to abuse that, too much spam as it is. > > An unknown error has occurred. I'm using Outlook Express 6. Well that proves that Microsoft had outdated
information for Support on their website. It should be updated, you might want to tell them to update it since you work for them. I tried what you suggested with deleting the Inbox.dbx and compacting the folders, it did not help. It still keeps having that error message. I also don't know how to use Telenet. I tried to use it earlier but it kept having some error message about how I was typing it. Are there any sites that tell how to do it better? How do you type it for the server name? Do you have to put pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com ort 110 like that? I just wondered.I'm going to try to call Dell today and get a restore CD. They never get me one with my computer and that pisses me off! Don't you get paid if you work for someone?
Tools, Accounts, Mail tab, highlight your account, Properties, Server tab The server name would be pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com.
