Default Can't connect

Hello. First of all thanks in advance for your help.
My problem is the following: I am connecting through another computer to the
Internet and I configured that OK. Internet Explorer, Mozilla, MSN Messenger,
etc., every program that uses Internet works ok and has access to the
Internet... except Outlook Express. Since I connect through another computer
I can't download my emails, it can't find the host. I checked the connection
tab in the settings and it is configured to use the same settings as Internet
Explorer.
How can I solve this?

1. Go to Tools | Accounts and double click the account. On the Connection
tab uncheck "Always connect to this account using:".

2. Turn off email scanning in your anti-virus. It provides no added
protection.

The Other E-Mail Threat: File Corruption in Outlook Express

Email scanning slows down Sending and Receiving, sometimes enough that OE
times out. Since some of the received messages have large (often virus)
attachments, which exasperates the problem.
Some Comcast users have found it necessary to totally uninstall Norton and
switch to the free AVG with mail scanning off. Norton invented email
scanning and here's what they say:

"Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions."
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...256c7500723cf0

"...your computer is protected if Auto-Protect is enabled. Auto-Protect
scans any incoming files, including email attachments, when the files are
saved to your hard drive."
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01100907323806

"NAV provides multiple layers of protection. Email scanning is just one of
those layers. Even if you are not running Email Scanning, your computer is
protected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments by NAV
Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect will scan any incoming files, including email
attachments, as they are saved to your hard drive. To make sure that
Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled
and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus
definitions."

So Symantec used to say this often and clearly. The newer stuff doesn't
have the statement included as it was considered an embarrassment. If you
know anyone who programs for Norton try to get them to talk about it.

Hello. Thank you for replying so quickly.
I had already donde the first thing you said and it did not work. Now I
turned off email protection and I still can't connect.
I am sure everything is well configured, otherwise why would Internet
Explorer work?
Thanks in advance.

After turning off email scanning it is sometimes necessary to reset the
server names in OE.

Anti-spam programs can also cause the problem.

Thank you again for the reply.
I deleted the account and added it again and I have the same problem. I
connected to the Internet using a dial up connection (ie directly) and I
could check my emails.
The error msg I get is: The host 'pop.mail.yahoo.com' could not be found.
Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account:
'Yahoo Mail', Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11004, Error Number. 0x800CCC0D.
Thank you!

Windows version? ISP? Have you ever been able to receive mail from your
Yahoo account in OE using the machine in question?

> I am connecting through another computer

Please explain the above: You're using someone else's computer? You're
connecting via Internet Connection Sharing with another computer on a (home)
network?

Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

Hello. I'm sorry for being so unclear. Thanks for your help.

- There are no previous messages of error, that is the only one.
- I am running WinXP SP2. I have a local ISP, that would be unknown for you.
- I've always been able to check my Yahoo! mail through POP3 using OE in
this computer. The difference now is that I used to connect directly to the
Internet (cable modem, dial up, or ADSL).
- I am connecting through my sister's computer. Wingate is installed in her
computer, and I have configured every program that uses Internet to connect
through HTTP server or SOCKS (proxy) to her computer, and it works OK except
for OE.

I hope that is all you asked.
Thank you very much!

And does disabling Email Scanning by your anti-virus application make any
difference?

The above notwithstanding, if you're now behind a proxy you'll most likely
have to reconfigure your settings at OE: Tools > Accounts > Mail > [Yahoo
account] > Properties > Connection > Always connect using...

Sorry about not including the previous msgs, I thought you were talking about
the error msgs I received in OE.
I tried that, but still didn't work.
Nothing is blocked in the Wingate configuration, all programs work OK but OE.
