This situation applies to both Outlook 2003 and OE6.
I cannot send any e-mails with standard attachments, e.g. JPG, PDF and ZIP. The only exception has been a DOC attachment. I have waded through the web, trying suggestion after suggestion, to no avail. My operating system is completely up-to-date. O/S: Windows XP Home SP2 Ms Office 2003 SP2 Firewall: Kerio (tried disabling, no effect). Anti-virus: Avast (tried disabling, no effect). Browser: IE6 and Opera (both working and up-to-date). Last major install: J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 (since uninstalled to no effect). I have tried numerous repairs, changes to the File Registry and just about every trick I can think of. After 3 days of trying, still nothing works! Finally, I have noticed numerous complaints regarding this issue. If it is so prevalent, why hasn't a fix been devised? TC |

Confirm 'Send pictures with messages' is ticked.

After doing so it may be necessary to reset the server names in OE. The Other E-Mail Threat: File Corruption in Outlook Express Published: November 18, 2004 By Tom Koch http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/...orruption.mspx Email scanning slows down Sending and Receiving, sometimes enough that OE times out. Since some of the received messages have large (often virus) attachments, which exasperates the problem. Some Comcast users have found it necessary to totally uninstall Norton and switch to the free AVG with mail scanning off. Norton invented email scanning and here's what they say: "Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions." http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...256c7500723cf0 "...your computer is protected if Auto-Protect is enabled. Auto-Protect scans any incoming files, including email attachments, when the files are saved to your hard drive." http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01100907323806 "NAV provides multiple layers of protection. Email scanning is just one of those layers. Even if you are not running Email Scanning, your computer is protected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments by NAV Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect will scan any incoming files, including email attachments, as they are saved to your hard drive. The newer stuff doesn't have the statement included as it was considered an embarrassment. If you know anyone who programs for Norton try to get them to talk about it. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE Please respond in Newsgroup only. Thanks for all the advice.
Recent tests have revealed that this situation has been resolved. I wish I could explain how this has been achieved, but I haven't got the slightest idea. I tested jpg, pdf and txt attachments by sending e-mails to myself and they were all successful. Just one idea. Is it conceivable that the PDF attachment which sparked off this issue was corrupt and caused some (temporary) damage? Just hope it works tomorrow! Merry Christmas. TC |

Looking through your original post, I don't see where you indicated what
exactly was the problem. Did you get an error message when you tried to send a message with an attachment? Did the sending process hang? Did the message seem to send but the message never arrived? Or did the message arrive but without the attachment? Or something else? -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "TC" <biz2tc@turnpike.me.uk> wrote in message news:1135371673.165101.12910@g47g2000cwa.googlegro ups.com... > Thanks for all the advice. > > Recent tests have revealed that this situation has been resolved. E-mails with attachments were hanging during the send process and then
timing out. I am now fairly sure that increasing the server timeout setting from a default of 1 minute was the answer. I just wish that I'd realised this simple fact sooner but, having only recently switched to broadband, I had never encountered this issue before. For information purposes, this setting is found in Tools\Accounts\Properties (button)\Advanced (tab). If a user has more than one e-mail account, it has to be altered for each account. Thanks for all the input everyone. It's really due to you that I re-evaluated my approach and discovered that I had overlooked something quite elementary. TC |

I have used DSL more than a year, just sent a 5 MG attachment, and still
have the server timeout set to 1 minute. -- Ron Sommer "TC" <biz2tc@turnpike.me.uk> wrote in message news:1135455505.950529.238470@g49g2000cwa.googlegr oups.com... > E-mails with attachments were hanging during the send process and then > timing out. Just one further point.
Amongst some of my 'herbal remedies', I ran a small program called TCPIP Repair (see http://www.xp-smoker.com/freeware.html). My ISP believes this could have influenced the outcome, i.e. resolved the problem. TC |
